Retainer care is extremely important, especially because if you keep your appliance in tip-top shape, it will keep your smile in tip-top shape.
Retainers are often used after orthodontic treatment is completed. They keep the teeth in place after they have shifted into the proper positions. Retainers can also be used to make minor adjustments to the smile. So, if you want a beautiful appearance for a lifetime, our McCord Orthodontics team recommends taking care of your retainer by doing the following things:
Properly store your retainer
If you properly store your retainer, you won’t risk losing it. This is why we ask you to place your appliance in its container immediately after you’ve taken it out of your mouth. Then, keep the container safe by putting it in your purse, pocket, or backpack. Please be careful not to sit on it or squish it.
Clean your retainer
It’s best to clean your appliance every day so the plaque and bacteria will stay away. You can clean your retainer by soaking it in denture cleaner, like Efferdent and Polident, for the recommended amount of time. Make sure you soak it in warm—never hot—water and you also rinse it off before putting it back into your mouth.
